A Backslapper's Worst Nightmare!

At the heart of the backslapper mentality is doom. They are by far the most pessimistic people in the entire Conspirasphere. For the backslapper, being a pessimist is more than just a worldview; it is a badge of bravery and honour, a symbol of nobility, a declaration of membership, a shibboleth. In that way it's not unlike the skeptics' relationship to MBA, see: https://hpanwo-voice.blogspot.com/2025/04/the-shermerlution-continues.html. One thing backslappers are obsessed with is what they call "human nature". My own views on this subject are detailed here: https://hpanwo-voice.blogspot.com/2013/08/savages.html. Backslappers consider themselves the ultimate experts and arbiters of human nature. Their own dark, cynical and misanthropic judgement cannot be questioned. Those who dare are shunned and denounced as cowards, obstinates and residents of "cloud cuckooland". The backslapper will say things like: "I'm just being realistic. I wish the world were different, but it is not; and we just have to face up to that fact!", the unspoken proviso being, of course, that only backslappers have the intelligence and courage necessary to endure such facing up. A classic piece of allegorical fiction is William Golding's Lord of the Flies, a story published in 1951 about a group of young boys who are stranded on a desert island without any adult supervision. Free from all constraints of authority they enter into a state of primeval chaos and eventually even commit murder. The author was a teacher and witnessed bullying and dominance conflicts in the playground of his school. This made him reject any hope in the decency of man. However, there was once a similar incident that happened for real. In 1965 a group of six schoolboys, aged thirteen to sixteen, from Tonga in the south Pacific were out in a boat when a storm struck and they got lost. Luckily they managed to land on the uninhabited island of Ata where they were marooned for fifteen months, eventually being rescued by a passing Australian ship. Before they left to carry the boys home, the sailors explored the island and were astonished at what they found. These immature teenagers had created a fully functional social infrastructure with a food supply, water tanks carved from tree stumps, tools made of wood, a patch of soil where they planted seeds and created a vegetable garden; and even a sports arena. The boys agreed to share all food and water. They worked as a team, hunting crabs and seagulls, and gathered eggs and wild bananas. One of them was a guitar player and made a crude instrument out of wood, some wire and a coconut shell. They sang and danced for fun, played badminton and held group prayers. When one boy broke his leg the others took care of him. It healed completely. Their diet and lifestyle actually made them healthier. William Golding's Lord of the Flies is a social commentary about how there is an innate brute inside every human being and that it lies under only a very thin veneer of civilization. It does not take much impetus to release that monster. I accept that in some situations that is true, but I disagree with Golding in that he stressed that the central condition that decides whether the monster's cage opens or is safety locked shut is authority. It was the loss of authority from parents and teachers that caused the characters in the book to break down into the condition they did. A powerful government is said to be necessary to preserve the peaceful and cooperative status quo. From what I've seen the opposite is true; human chaos and internecine violence is more likely to erupt in conditions of extreme authority, like a boarding school, prison or repressive nation state. In my own country crime rates are rising at the same time as our government becomes more and more despotic. We have even coined a new word for it, "anarcho-tyranny". To be fair, the characters in Golding's book were British and their six real life counterparts were Tongan. There must be a large cultural difference between them; but they were still the same species with biological coded and evolved mental traits. It occurs to me that the backslappers' attempt at anthropology must actually be quite convenient for those inside the Deep State who want a draconian one-world government. Those with the last vestiges of a conscience can justify it by claiming it is necessary to save us from ourselves. Therefore we should not be surprised when the "it's just human nature, mate" line is promoted very heavily in the mainstream. I have noticed it myself, in soap operas for example, see: https://hpanwo-voice.blogspot.com/2014/02/eastenders-murder.html. William Golding's novel is often studied in schools to this day. The truth is that humans are a social species who do have the ability to cooperate, in fact it is necessary if we are to remain social. Especially in times of adversity, our "nature, mate" would not survive Darwin's great filter otherwise.
