American Sasquatch

 

There is a huge amount of information available about the Bigfoot mystery; books, documentaries, websites, social media pages etc. Thousands of people dedicate their lives to searching for it in the wilderness, including some personal friends of mine. David Paulides' new film is very original because it breaks the assumption that all Bigfoot encounters are cryptozoological phenomena, simply the presence of an unknown animal. Paulides is best known for his investigations into mysterious disappearances of people, the "Missing 411" works, but he has always had an interest in Bigfoot, what he calls more often by its Amerindian name Sasquatch. In this new production he looks for the link between Bigfoot and the paranormal. I was as surprised as he clearly was when I first found out, but such a connection definitely exists, at least in some instances. David interviews numerous people who have seen Bigfoot, but at the same time have seen UFO's, orbs, and other strange occurrences. Of course, the paranormal happens also in the absence of Bigfoot, but it's surely not just a coincidence when the two mysteries independently manifest together so often. What's more a very recurrent phenomenon is when portals appear in the air and Bigfoots walk out of them, demonstrating a direct link. This happened most famously at Skinwalker Ranch and David includes an interview in the film with Colm Kelleher, the leading NIDS researcher into that location. Sometimes Bigfoots just appear and disappear into think air. Strangely enough, another researcher called Adam Davies also encountered a flying rod of light like Ron did, but this time the phenomenon was far more dramatic and frightening. David reports that spooky things happened to the crew while they were making the film. They saw UFO's above the trees and orbs. Sometimes their equipment inexplicably failed. Along with Bigfoot, sometimes humanoids are encountered that appear translucent, semi-transparent yet distorted. Witnesses have compared them to the creature in the film Predator that uses a cloaking device to bypass light rays around itself and so making itself partly invisible. The ideas in this film have triggered a controversy in the Bigfoot research community not unlike the one in UFOlogy between the "nuts and bolts" vs the "high strangeness" tendencies. In my view these two models are not mutually exclusive. As with UFO's and ghosts we may be dealing with more than one phenomenon that we have generically categorized into a single one by mistake. There's no doubt Bigfoot is a physical being. It leaves footprints and specimens like hair, and it has DNA. It can be seen, heard, smelled and even touched. It may well have a higher level of intelligence than its recognized simian cousins. I think some Bigfoots are genuine and literal cryptids. There are too many sightings of it without anything else weird attached; but there is an adjacent phenomenon that resembles it, but is actually not it. It comes under what Jonathan Downes (the go-to author on this subject I think) called "zooform phenomena". Such beings are a bit like the cases of aliens that look very human, sometimes indistinguishable from ordinary people, but are in fact not human nor from the earth. If there is an overlap between this mysterious creature and aliens then that could be a reason why. Representative Tim Burchett is featured as well, and he is currently best known for his stance on ending UAP secrecy. He makes the same point very perceptively. American Sasquatch is well worth a watch, whether you agree or disagree. Even skeptics might like it because at the start it appears to debunk a very famous recent piece of Bigfoot footage.
