Jurassic Bigfoot

The latest episode of On The Track, the videocast by the Centre for Fortean Zoology, the host and guest present an extraordinary and exciting new idea. The Bigfoot researcher Ray Harwood is interviewed by Jonathan Downes, director of the CFZ, and Ray believes evidence for Bigfoot and other cryptids could be found using mosquito blood meal analysis. This is a standard procedure used by vetenarians and agricultural scientists to track disease transmission and livestock health. It is carried out by catching mosquitoes in a net or other trap and testing their stomach contents, blood from animals they've been feeding from. This was the basis behind the film Jurassic Park in which dinosaurs were cloned from the DNA found in ancient mosquitoes embalmed in amber. In real life this is not possible in specimens millions of years old, but it can be done if the insect has fed within the last couple of days. Therefore Ray thinks this method could be applied to the search for unknown creatures. As Jon says, this is: "so obvious in its simplicity that none of us can believe that someone else hadn't thought of it years ago." He compares this to having millions of free drones flying around doing the field research for us. Bigfoot might steer clear of people with cameras, but it cannot avoid being bitten by parasitic insects. If we catch a mosquito, tick or similar minibeast after it has recently fed on Bigfoot then some of the cryptid's blood will be inside it, include a genome. So long as we have a good way of testing the DNA properly we could find hard evidence that Bigfoot exists. It's not easy; after all chimpanzee DNA is hard to separate from humans seeing as it's 98% the same. There has apparently already been a signature of an "unknown simian" in Florida USA. Could this be the legendary skunk ape? It's not certain. There are also zoos in Florida with chimps and gorillas etc. This will take a lot of work, but if it succeeds then it will be a massive breakthrough.
