Very sad news today, the Roswell
Daily Record is in administration and will probably have to shut down. The Record is a small local newspaper that
has a regular readership of just twelve thousand, but it is the most famous
journal in the world for any UFO enthusiast. This is because on July the 8th 1947 it published an
article with the immortal title: "RAAF Captures Flying Disk". In my
book, Roswell Rising- a Novel of
Disclosure, the main character is the fictional reporter who writes it,
see: https://hpanwo-bb.blogspot.com/2016/08/roswell-rising-is-here.html.
I have sent review copies of Rising
and its two sequels to the RDR. The Record was launched in 1903 by Charles
Manson (not the serial killer) and Harvey Bear. Like all print newspapers it
has been forced to downsize in recent years due to modern technology and media
habits, and has reduced its frequency to three paper issues a week; but it kept
going until July 2026. Its current publisher, Barbara Beck, has announced that
its assets are in liquidation. There is an ongoing effort hopefully to sell it,
but so far this has not been successful. Source: https://nmpoliticalreport.com/2026/07/13/the-newspaper-that-broke-the-roswell-ufo-story-is-shutting-down/.
This is tragic. The Roswell Daily Record,
for me, is one of the greatest newspapers in the world along with The Light, Nexus magazine and Fortean
Times; if only because of its one-off revolutionary coverage of the UFO phenomenon.
Surely somebody out there has the will and money to buy it. How about Robert
Bigelow? He has the passion and the cash. Bob, if you're reading this, snap it
up, mate! I hope somebody does so that this historical periodical can be saved.

It's not only sad to see the demise of the printed news but it does have an impact on journalism with far fewer entry point roles in local news outlets. It seems a couple of newspapers each week disappear in the US. Coupled with the rise of fake news throughout social media and 'influencers' cosplaying as bona fide journalists without education, training, oversight or regulation the future of holding the rich and powerful to account seems a distant memory in western democracies. When the President claims 'Alternative facts' when caught out in any number of untruths people should rightly be demanding 'where is the press?' only to find he has threatened the press with legal action and closure should they report anything damaging about him or his administration. The press in the US is no longer free and these small local news outlets are the last bastion of truth in a country led by lies.
Hi Anon. That's sadly true. However, the rot began long before the Orange Man 2.0 started trying to silence them. In fact as long ago as 1880, an early editor of the New York Times made a speech that is as relevant today as it was all those years ago:
"There is no such thing, at this date of the world's history, in America, as an independent press. You know it and I know it.None of you would dare to write your honest opinions, and if you did, you know beforehand that it would never appear in print. I am paid weekly for keeping my honest opinion out of the paper I am connected with. Others of you are paid similar salaries for similar things, and any of you who would be so foolish as to write honest opinions would be out on the streets looking for another job. If I allowed my honest opinions to appear in one issue of my paper, before twenty-four hours my occupations would be gone. The business of the journalists is to destroy the truth, to lie outright, to pervert, to vilify, to fawn at the feet of mammon, and to sell his country and his race for his daily bread. You know it and I know it, and what folly is this tooting a toast to an independent press? We are the tools and vassals of rich men behind the scenes. We are the jumping jacks, they pull the strings and we dance. Our talents, our possibilities and our lives are all the property of other men. We are intellectual prostitutes."
A very poignant quote and I agree just as relevant today Ben. It's very disheartening but I'm confident that there will always be a tipping point that the public demand change. It could well be the issue of AI where there is a concern of facts being swamped by fiction causing complete breakdown in accessible accurate information by the public. Perhaps take a look at the 'Dead internet theory' if you want to explore some of the fears/concerns with a more 'conspiratorial' slant.
Hi Anon. I'm also fundamentally an optimist. I've seen as many white pills in the world as black. Funnily enough my local woo-woo friend "Lance Corporal" mentioned the dead internet. This is the reason was not overwhelmingly enthused when my shadowban apparently ended, see: https://hpanwo-voice.blogspot.com/2026/07/blogger-unbanned.html
