Zombie Spiders

 

I'm sure there's the plot of a horror movie in this story! Some spiders have been discovered with an horrific fungal infection that causes them to behave like zombies. The fungus was discovered in some caves in Ireland and nobody knows where it comes from, but it is spreading. It was originally confined to a subterranean network in Fermanagh and Caven, but has since spread to at least one urban area of County Down. The fungus does not literally reanimate dead spiders, but it causes them to behave unnaturally, leaving sheltered and safe areas so that they wander around in the open, making themselves vulnerable to predators like birds and lizards. By allowing themselves to be eaten they spread the fungus' spores. The fungus was identified in 2021 and named Gibellula attenboroughii after Sir David Attenborough. I wonder how Sir Dave feels about not having a more loveable organism named after him, like a new species of squirrel or something. Although it is currently confined to the island of Ireland it will inevitably spread elsewhere, probably globally. It might also adapt into species that can infect other animals as well. As it happens there is a computer game and TV series inspired by the idea of fungus causing humans to become zombies, The Last of Us, a programme I've never seen. I don't want to give my readers nightmares and it is very unlikely that a natural disease of this kind could ever evolve into a human pathogen; however, it may give the Illuminati ideas. They may decide to cook something up in their secret laboratories along those lines. I find it odd that at the same time this subject appeared, the "CONPLAN 8888" was also resurrected in the news.
