Chain Reaction

 

Ashton Forbes did a livestream the other day in which he recommended a film called Chain Reaction. It is quite old, from 1996, and when I watched it I was surprised I'd never heard of it until now. It is a story about a group of scientists who develop a system for extracting hydrogen from water with overunity, meaning the system's energy output is greater than its input. The technique involves "sonoluminescence", like that developed by Rusi Taleyarkhan as covered in a very deceptive BBC TV show, see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0CN1gAu1Hys. One of the team's technicians is called Eddie and is played by Keanu Reeves. He escapes from a bomb attack on the laboratory before the experiment can be published. What follows is a very fast-paced action thriller, very Dan Brown, in which Eddie and his colleague Lily are chased across frozen lakes and down dark tunnels by bad guys in suits. The main antagonist is played by Brian Cox... no, not that one... and there is another character called Paul Shannon, played by Morgan Freeman, who is very ambiguous and before the end it is uncertain whose side he's on. The film only gets really interesting near the end where the baddies try to repeat the experiment secretly in their underground lair. During that scene, Shannon and Eddie have this conversation:
Shannon: "People want to live their split-level homes and eat microwave dinners and watch colour TV."
Eddie: "Is that what you think?"
Shannon: "Alistair was a dreamer. Clean air, free energy. Noble concepts, but we live on a planet that's addicted to petroleum. Now what happens if you dump free energy onto the world market? Stock markets around the world would plummet! Our own economy (the USA) would collapse overnight. Recession, unemployment, war. The world is speeding up too fast now, Eddie. We can barely hold on as it is."
Eddie: "You're right; it's not working. That's why we've got to try something else. Not bury the technology, but let it out."
Shannon: "You let it out, but you let it out at a pace the world can absorb."

Of course those behind the coverup plan never to let it out. This reminds me very much of this conversation in my own production Roswell Rising- a Novel of Disclosure:
"But come on, Gerald; when are we going to see free energy released for public development?"
"Never."
There was a long silence. "Gerald... what?..."
The waiters arrived with their starter course. When they'd gone, Caxton leaned forward on the table and looked hard into Clane's eyes. "Listen to me, Clane. This technology can never be declassified. The public are never going to have access to it."
"Why not?" he croaked.
"Why not?... Well, why don't I turn that question on its head and ask you: Why should they? How can we tell them?"
"Easily." Clane was frowning in disbelief. "We just announce it... easily."
"Easily?... Right, so you plan to knock on the door of the chairman of Royal Dutch Shell and say: 'Good morning. I've just come to tell you your services are no longer required'. Just like that?"
Clane nodded.
"And what's he going to say: 'Alright, no problem. You still need oil to make candles! That's a good idea, Shell Candles! They're pretty colours! They smell nice! They won't stain your wallpaper! There'll be a smart dollar on that!'?" Caxton's face became annoyed and exasperated in his sarcasm; as if he were explaining something very obvious that Clane was foolish not to consider. "You don't get it, do you, Clane?... Oil is not the biggest industry in the world; it is industry! It is the lifeblood and the lubricant of civilization! Take that away and what happens? The world order as we know it will descend into chaos! The West will fall into mediocrity! India and China will dominate the globe with their huge populations and vast resources!... It never ceases to amaze me how candid people are in revealing the truth when they're doing it through fictional allegory. There have been other similar narratives before and since; and we will not seen the last of them, as the veil between the covert and overt world thins.

Bruce Maccabee Dies

I'm sorry to report that Dr Bruce Maccabee has passed away. Dr Bruce was a scientist who did a lot of good work for the Naval Ordnance Laboratory, later called the Naval Surface Warfare Centre, developing underwater laser technology. He was a dedicated UFO researcher with a lifelong interest in the subject and he was active with NICAP in the 60's. He retired from the US Navy in 2008 and has investigated UFO's fulltime ever since. He was MUFON state director for Maryland, a position he kept even though he moved to Ohio. In 1979 he helped establish FUFOR, the Fund for UFO Research. He investigated numerous UFO incidents and had his own encounter in 1991. He also helped David Paulides investigate his own wife's alien encounter in some woods near their home in 2010. Bruce has been described as very intelligent and packed with knowledge. David called him "the smartest man I've ever met." He is one of those essential figures in the UFO community who work extremely hard but quietly behind the scenes to bring home the goods in terms of evidence without which the more flamboyant public characters of UFOlogy would be helpless. He was totally committed to government UFO transparency. He was also very musical and could play the piano. He had recently been battling a serious illness, but happily celebrated his eighty-second birthday last week with his family. He has left this world, but his work will live on. Is the Messiah Coming?

 

The strange case of the tunnelling Jews of New York, see: https://hpanwo-voice.blogspot.com/2024/01/substack-exclusive-notice-14124.html, is actually part of a larger and more widespread pattern of behaviour. I've come across many other publications indicating that there are a growing number of people who believe that the End is Nigh, especially in the Jewish community. They believe that the Messiah, or מָשִׁיחַ, "mashiach", is about to come forward on the earth. According to Abrahamic eschatology, the Messiah is the redeemer of humanity born to return the fallen man to unity with God. Jews, Christians, Muslims and other faiths vary in their beliefs, but the central theme of the Messiah is the same, see the background links below. The Messiah is a male figure born of the line of David, that is Jewish royalty, who will become the king of the Jews and will be anointed with holy oil. He will usher in a new age in which the God of Israel will restore the world to a state of grace. I've come across an interview between two Jewish ladies. It's not easy to follow because they talk primarily about their personal lives, and insert many Hebrew and Yiddish words into their discussion, but the meaning is still obvious. They regard the October the 7th massacre as a prelude to Armageddon. This is understandable considering it was the worst crime against Jewish people since the Russian pogroms. They say that the recent solar eclipse, see: https://hpanwo-tv.blogspot.com/2024/04/eclipse-o-pocalypse-livestream.html, might be another sign from God. It is very often when a terrible disaster afflicts a people or nation that apocalyptic ideas become popular and those ideas will fit into the theology of that culture. Personally, I'm not poised for arrival on earth of a supernatural being who will make everything alright. I don't rule it out totally, but I doubt it. If I am wrong then I will be a Thomas and take responsibility for my lack of faith. However, as I explain in the background links below, I believe the archetype of the Apocalypse is a real thing. It will emerge in one form or another; and I do accept that an age of change which is parallel to the Messianic one, if not identical in form, is indeed upon us.

Solar Storms

 

Listeners of the HPANWO Show on HPANWO Radio will know that on every programme I deliver a space weather report. What is happening right now is one of the reasons I do that. This is by far the biggest and most energetic sunspot I've ever seen since I began the project in 2012. The spot is so huge its diameter is more than fifteen times that of the earth. It can be seen on the solar disk without any magnification. (NB: please do not look at the sun without the correct optical equipment or eclipse goggles. Otherwise you risk permanent blindness from the damage the light and ultraviolet radiation can do to your eyes.) This sunspot is as big and as powerful as the famous Carrington sunspot of 1859. There is a comparative illustration above where the two sunspot records are superimposed onto the solar disk. When the Carrington event happened, the spot erupted with a massive X-class solar flare and coronal mass ejection; which resulted in a G5 extreme type geomagnetic storm which overloaded the entire electronic infrastructure of the earth. Luckily in those days that just meant a few telegraph wires, but in today's day and age the electronic infrastructure is so much more complex and we are so much more dependent on it. A Carrington event today would not cause any physical harm to life on earth, but it would devastate the human world with widespread power-cuts and telephone and internet outages. This would throw the financial world into chaos and threaten the safety of ships at sea and aircraft in flight; and that's just the beginning. There are ways and means of reducing the harm caused by a Carrington event; for example by reducing power on the national grid, shutting down computers etc, but this requires coordination and planning. If such an event happens we may not get much notice. Solar flares travel very quickly, many hundred of miles per second. We may only get one or two days to prepare, possibly less. In 2003 there was a geomagnetic storm that caused a blackout across millions of square miles of North America that lasted three days. Is this going to happen again, or worse? I don't know. All we can really do right now is enjoy the free fireworks. Yes, there will be aurora borealis in the sky tonight in latitudes that don't normally see them. The Masque of the Red Death

Following my exploration into the world of doomsday bunkers for the elite, I came across a story from a British-Canadian author called Cory Doctorow, The Masque of the Red Death. This is of course the title of a famous 1842 novella by Edgar Allen Poe about the attempts of the wealthy elite to lock themselves away in a castle while the plague devastates their land. Doctorow's 2019 story has the same basic plot, but it is set in the present day and is about super-rich doomsday preppers, the same kind who might be planning to "bug out" to New Zealand when "the shit hits the fan". The novella is one of four in an anthology called Radicalized. It was inspired by the author's feelings of living in the United States during the Trump era. (Unlike me, he is very leftwing; I regard that era a bit differently, see: https://hpanwo.blogspot.com/2021/01/donald-trump-portal.html.) The central character is called Martin Mars and he is a high level financier with a very ruthless and pragmatic outlook on life. He knows something is coming which he calls "the Event"; this has the same meaning as the "black swan event" although in this story there is no doubt that it is a spontaneous, natural and unplanned crisis. At the moment he thinks is just perfect, not too soon and not too late, he leaves his luxury mansion in the city and heads for the hills in his armoured car where he has built a luxury underground doomsday bunker. He invites thirty of his friends to join him. He plans to wait out the apocalypse in comfort until things have calmed down and then return to resume his privileged lifestyle. He feels no sorrow at the fate of the millions left behind to die. He sees this is a normal dialectic of society in which the human herd is organically culled, what he euphemistically terms "market adjustment". The common folk who have no bunker to retreat into and so will inevitably perish Martin gives the chilling epithet "unnecessariat". In his bunker he has a radio scanner so he can keep up with what's going on in the outside world. Also sometimes he and his fellow hideaways venture out to see what they can scavenge. This goes very badly in some cases; for example when they try to raid a community of heavily armed hillbillies. They also have to threaten prowlers who drop by in the hope of a place inside the bunker. In the city where they used to live, the breakdown of sanitary infrastructure has led to an outbreak of dysentery that kills most of the people it infects. Martin and his smug bunker dwelling cohorts assume that they are safe from such epidemics, but they are wrong. Despite the very grim ending to the story I don't see it as a tragedy. In fact I can't help feeling a sense of satisfaction, that Martin is receiving just desserts for his own attitude and choices. It also exposes the entire fantasy of elite survivalism that I detail in the background link above. Manifest

 

Manifest is described as a "supernatural TV drama"; that sounds right up my street, and it is. It is about a group of people who are passengers on an airliner that disappears in mid-flight... sound familiar? Then it suddenly reappears five and a half years later for reasons not explained up to the point I've been watching it. No time at all has passed for the passengers and crew except the normal duration of the flight. They've effectively gone through a time slip. As a result they have to face numerous problems. During their absence they were presumed dead, and their friends and family have moved on without them. Partners have found new spouses; siblings are much older or younger than each other. Life insurance has to be paid back. The passengers and the people around them have to rebuild their lives. They suffer a lot of media attention and public infamy; not to mention harassment and kidnapping from an intelligence agency and secret government scientists. Some people worship them as deities. However, there is even more; they all find they have extrasensory perception, what they nickname "the callings". These can be useful. One of the characters is a policewoman and she solves several crimes by using her callings. Another is a doctor and her callings give her insight into curing her patients. There are four seasons so far, but I stopped watching it a few episodes into season two because it had lost a lot of the energy that made the first season very good. Source: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt8421350/. The series is clearly inspired by the disappearance of MH370. How close is it to the truth? Do I think MH370 will somehow just reappear in the sky? No. I don't know where the Malaysian Airlines plane is; one day it might be found. Probably in the meantime it will inspire more works of fiction.

I Backed a Winner!

 

How much did I win?... No it wasn't a horse; it was Alan Yeatman, candidate... and now elected city councillor, for my ward in Oxford. The last time I voted in an election for somebody who actually won was in 1997 when I backed Labour under Tony Blair in the general election... I know, and I'm not proud of myself. Alan's party, the Independent Oxford Alliance, is not perfect, but it is by far the most positive and has the potential to do the best job. It opposes the Big Brother reforms for which Oxford has been made a national, and even international, guinea pig. See the background link for details. Source: https://independentoxfordalliance.org. As you can see, Alan is the party secretary. He received 842 votes, once of which was mine, beating his nearest rival, Labour, by over 200. I'm pleased to see that the other IOA candidates were also very popular. Chaka Artwell, somebody I've met, came second in Barton and Sandhills, only slightly behind the Labour winner. Halima Banaras came third in Donnington, beating the Lib Dems and Tories. Ben Christopher got 391 in Hinksey. Anne Stares got elected in Littlemore, as did Judith Harley in Lye Valley and David Henwood for Rose Hill and Iffley. Source: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/election/2024/england/results. Nationally, Labour have swept the board. They have gained at least 170 councillors while the Tories have been eviscerated; they've lost 422 at the time of writing. Keir Starmer is doing a victory dance all over the media, but is he justified in his vainglory? The fact that the Lib Dems, Greens, small parties and independents have gained so much, and a predicted low turnout, indicates Labour's triumph is somewhat anticlimactic. The electorate have not been captured by Starmer's dream for a better Britain. They probably see him as a slimy greasy-haired knob just like I do. It's just that most of his supporter base stayed at home, or voted Green or for a leftist party. At the moment we're all waiting to see if Sad Git Khan will be still be London Mayor; we will not know for sure until tomorrow evening. Is this a herald for the upcoming general election? Probably; but time will tell. Sunak will surely delay it for as long as possible; it is for the Conservatives, after all, a stay of execution. It might not happen until January next year, but will probably be in the autumn.

Lotus Eaters go Full Woo

 

One of my favourite YouTube channels is Podcast of the Lotus Eaters, a political discussion project set up by Carl Benjamin, "Sargon of Akkad". Every day they present a show of about an hour to two about various topics. They are very much on the side of the "anti-woke" movement, just like me; but they have up till now been either silent or evasive about conspiratological ideas, for example: https://hpanwo-voice.blogspot.com/2023/02/sargon-on-ufos-again.html. They occasionally dip their toes into those shark infested waters, for example the Bigfoot episodes behind the paywall, but generally they are not a woo-woo publisher. That has now changed very suddenly. In programme 904 they have a segment on the moon landings and the content astonished me. Dan is normally one of the more centrist and level-headed members of the panel, yet he essentially comes out of the closet in this show as a tinfoil hatter. He begins by listing a series of conspiracy theories that have been proven true such as Tuskegee, Gulf of Tonkin, Iran-Contra and MK Ultra; but after that it becomes clear he is open to some others that are yet to be proven true but probably are. This includes all the usual ones; JFK, 9/11 etc. Previously he always left the moon landings alone, considering it too far out; but the Covid issue weakened his certainty and he gradually went from a true NASA believer to "about fifty-fifty". He was challenged by Beau who is convinced the Apollo moon missions were completely real and they have an interesting back and forth. Towards the end Beau is clearly dallying with the concept himself. Of course, I am familiar with both sides of this debate and most of what they talk about, but Dan does bring up some new points. AI fake image spotters have identified much of the Apollo TV and photographic record as suspicious. I also have never heard of the arm appearing outside the command module. The third member of the panel, Callum, sits there in total silence like the quiet man at a pub table who just wants to stay out of it. He occasionally scowls. It's impossible to know what he thinks of this subject. I will watch closely to see what levels of Ickian occult ET HPANWO-esque mumbo-jumbo the Eaters will descend to next. I Feel Fantastic!

Since that happy incident I've had another opportunity to confront "Cathy" and this time I really meant business! This was not something I planned; the chance just dropped into my lap yesterday. It made me realize that our previous encounter was not as healing as I hoped it would be. It was only a temporary patch, not a permanent repair. I am a member of an email group containing my family members and two of our closest friends, de facto relatives essentially. I will omit a lot of the details for the sake of anonymity, but it began when Cathy said something I disagreed with. I was about to write out a simple and typical rebuttal, but then stopped. After sleeping on it and thinking about it all day today at work, I decided to send her this response:
 
Hi Cathy.
(The first paragraph describes the issue we differed on.)
Obviously we may continue to disagree on this. That's fine with me, but there are right and wrong ways to disagree. A good example of the wrong way is when I told you that I had voted Leave in the Brexit referendum. I approached you and my dad in good faith over this matter. (I wish I had kept my mouth shut and will never make that mistake again.) There a dozen ways you could have responded. You could have explained, calmly and politely, exactly why you think I am wrong. We could have had a productive discussion, built a consensus, and you may even have been able to change my mind. I am a rational person and my position is always falsifiable. But instead you just yelled at me: "You've never run a business, Ben! What would you know!?" This is a prime example of an ad hominem fallacy. That is why I pointed out to you: "So, what if somebody who HAD run a business made the same point as me?" You replied: "I doubt if that would happen." Do you not see the absurdity of your position? All I have to do then is produce one Brexiteer ally who runs a business and you've lost the "debate" hands down. Tim Martin, CEO of JD Wetherspoon, is the most famous of these. I put the word "debate" in quotes because the next thing you said was: "Everybody who voted Leave is stupid!" That is not an axiom in a debate; that is an insult and an attack; an insult against me personally and an attack against all the millions of people who dare to disagree with you... And you wonder why people vote for Farage!? I almost walked out at that point and I should have! So could I request that you please do not address me with that kind of disrespect in future disputes? If you acknowledge my good faith and trust I'm sure we could have a far more honest discussion. Thank you.
Regarding your general conduct towards me, it goes beyond just debating one issue. Nobody is a rubber ball that you can just toss against a brick wall again and again in the reassurance that they will not break... although some members of my family pretend to be that. Maybe this has led you into the delusion that we are. A few Christmases ago I bought you a book that I thought you might enjoy as a present. It was called Screwed by the Aliens by Timothy Green Beckley (a good friend of mine who has since passed away.) You looked at it and decided you didn't think you would enjoy it. I have been in this situation myself a few times. On those occasions I try to treat the person giving me the unwanted present with sensitivity and tolerance, in the knowledge that they have thought of me with kindness and a desire to make me happy; and have put consideration, time and money into an effort to make my life better. I might return the gift to them privately afterwards with an: "I appreciate this, but..." conversation. Or I might just say nothing and donate it quietly to a charity library. You could not or would not show me that consideration. You tossed the book contemptuously onto the coffee table with a sneer and the words: "Oh, no thank you!" You did this in front of my entire family and (the name of one of our friends). This made me feel incredibly uncomfortable, humiliated and embarrassed, but I bit my tongue to maintain the sacred "doing Christmas" decorum. I must insist that you do not behave like that towards me again. I think I am entitled to request that little bit of basic human respect from you. Not a lot, just a little. I do not think that is unreasonable. What's more I think the same goes for other members of this family, should they feel they too have been mistreated in a similar way, but are suffering in silence to "avoid the hassle." I, for one, will suffer in silence no longer! I'm not just talking about my own welfare. If I detect any violation of other members of this family, or our circle of friends, from any individual, expect me to take action.
I will not read any more letters posted in this email group. I look forward to joining you in (an upcoming birthday party.)

Well, I've really pulled the pin there! I CC'ed the entire group; since when has she respected my personal sovereignty? I feel fantastic! I feel wonderful! I don't know if you've ever picked up a heavy bag and carried it around for so long that it begins to feel normal, a thorn in your flesh that will be there forever and you just have to put up with it... And then suddenly you drop the bag. That feeling of relief! Freedom! Empowerment! It's overwhelming. I don't know what will happen as a result of my sacrilege and I don't particularly care. Scanning the River Update

A friend has answered my appeal for information and it appears the men I encountered were in fact real policemen and they were part of Thames Valley Police's Forensics Imaging Unit. The device they were operating is a lidar scanner; one is also illustrated above. Lidar is short for Light Detection and Ranging and it is a way of creating a three dimensional electronic model of a crime scene, which is an important tool during a police investigation or trial. Lidar is harmless and therefore the bones and corpses I saw in the woods must have another cause, possibly the bad weather.

Runaway Horses

 

Yesterday the news was dominated by a story that looked on the surface apocalyptic. Horses were spotted galloping through the streets of London, dodging pedestrians and colliding with vehicles. Five horses altogether were loose, but the story focused on two of them, a black and white one; although the white was clearly badly injured and bleeding profusely because it has been struck by a double-decker bus. I don't know what the horses' names are, but no doubt somebody has nicknamed them "Famine" and "War". Of course red horses don't exist, but the poor white horse looks half red because of its bleeding. Some people related it to another cataclysmic source; a scene from the zombie flick 28 Days Later, a film I've only seen part of and disliked. Everybody wondered where on earth the horses could have come from and quickly the answer was announced. They belong to the Household Cavalry, a corps made up of the Army regiments the Life Guards and the Blues and Royals. They are among the ceremonial troops commonly seen marching in London for the tourists and the Royal Family. Of course, nobody takes horses onto a battlefield anymore, but they are kept for the sake of pomp and tradition. They are highly trained and it is unusual for them to behave like this. Apparently the horses were part of a parade rehearsal near Victoria Station when noises from a neighbouring building site frightened them. They immediately threw their riders and bolted. They were eventually captured and returned to their stables at the Hyde Park Barracks. So, all's well that ends well I suppose. It does feel like there might be some predictive programming here. We'll see. I'm actually relieved that the police didn't shoot the horses this time. We know from the experience of the Merseyside white stag that the police have become very trigger-happy lately with innocent beings. No doubt they'd have mumbled some platitudes about "public safety", but thankfully it never came to that.

"Scanning" the River

I took a dog for a walk today and we went on our usual route that runs beside the river Isis, what we in Oxford call the Thames. When we arrived I got a bit of a shock. A section of the towpath had been closed by the police, or at least I assume they were police because of their uniform; but they could have been somebody else in disguise. One of them was standing by a lock where I usually join the Thames Path and he said: "Could you go that way instead please, sir." He pointed to the old stone bridge. "We're just doing some scanning." He didn't explain what he meant by scanning. I crossed over the bridge and saw a big police warning sign announcing that the path was closed; another identical sign had been set up on the path about a hundred yards away downstream. A group of three or four other men in police uniforms were operating some kind of machine raised on a tripod. There is a patch of woodland right beside the lock and a muddy track runs through it; therefore I was able to double back to where the cordon was, hidden by the trees. It was there that I took this series of photographs.

The machine they were using for what they called "scanning". Do any readers recognize this? If so please let me know in the comments.

While I was walking through the woods close to where the scanner was I came across several dead animals, two rats and a squirrel. It is unusual to see that many corpses together in such a small forest. They did not look like recent deaths though, so I'm not saying whatever the scanning machine was killed them. If so I would have fled the location out of fear for my own health and that of the dog. There were also a large number of animal bones. The dog picked up a section of jawbone from what looked like a deer and, as usual, I had a bit of trouble persuading him to put it down. There was nothing else out of the ordinary at the location. I'm not sure what was going on; except a few months ago the police, definitely the real police this time, shut that same stretch of the Thames Path to perform a reconstruction while investigating an accident in which a pedestrian was killed by a speeding cyclist, see: https://www.oxfordmail.co.uk/news/23679085.oxford-cyclist-accused-thames-towpath-death-court/. I don't know if there's a connection. There has been nothing in the news about today's goings on. I'll be walking the same route tomorrow at about the same time of day so if anything else is untoward I will report on it.

Rain in Dubai

 

The United Arab Emirates is a desert country which receives very little rain. It has risen steadily over the last few decades, but still on average less than five inches falls a year. As a result there are no rivers and no need for drains or gutters etc to disperse rainwater. Then suddenly ten inches falls within hours; it has caused a flash flood of biblical proportions known as the 2024 greater Persian Gulf floods. The city of Dubai has a global reputation for being some kind of urban theme park. It includes the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, and many others that are nearly as big. It is a checkerboard of shopping malls, luxury hotels and mansions. These concrete marvels have all been inundated. Four people have drowned and millions of dollars worth of damage has been done. The airport has had to close and residents have been evacuated from their homes. Obviously the media is blaming "Climate Change!" What's weird is that a video appeared a few weeks earlier which received almost no attention at all, but since the flood it has gone viral. In it a young man in traditional Emirati dress explains how rain in Dubai is created artificially through cloud seeding. This is not a secret or uncommon practice. Fire-fighters use it to extinguish forest fires and it is sometimes used at the Winter Olympics to increase snowfall. This leads inevitably to the question of whether the floods in the Emirates were caused by this method. Did they overdo the cloud seeding by accident? In that case the authorities should face massive lawsuits. Or was it deliberate? If so why? Eco-terrorism? Or has somebody organized some kind of monstrous insurance fraud? England, my own country, has been beset these last few weeks by some of the worst chemtrailing I've ever seen. It has been accompanied by one of the coldest and wettest springs on record. What plans do the geoengineers have for our future weather?

Smoking Ban Insanity

 

MP's have backed a plan to "encourage" people to give up smoking by making it illegal below a certain age. That law already exists, you might say, because it is in fact a crime to buy tobacco products under the age of eighteen, but the government want to change it so that this age limit rises by one year per calendar year. So next year the minimum smoking age will be nineteen and in 2026 it will be twenty etc. The result will be that anybody born after 2009 will never be able to smoke legally for their entire lives. Obviously this means in a few decades nobody will be able to buy cigarettes and tobacco will effectively become a prohibited drug. Other countries are following suite, such as New Zealand, Portugal and (predictably) Canada. Source: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-68825322. This is a very stupid law, playing devil's advocate, because the government are destroying a massive revenue stream. Smoking materials are very heavily taxed, over 40% in some cases. They generate billions of pounds annually for the exchequer. On an ethical level, they justify it by saying they want to eliminate the unhealthiest everyday practice in the world. About 80,000 people a year die from illnesses caused by smoking. Everybody knows how bad smoking is for our health. Schoolchildren have to watch "love your lungs" videos, every packet of cigarettes has a warning label on it so big it almost covers the whole pack. The problem is that nobody forces us to take up smoking. It is a decision we make as adults; as I said, under-eighteens cannot buy cigarettes. Also don't forget smokers contribute a huge amount of extra tax to the NHS which has to treat smoking-related diseases. It is very typical of the government to try and solve a problem through raw coercion; it's the only language they understand. This is a decision that I made as an adult, but I feel very different about being commanded not to by the state. This is the government infantilizing us, reducing us to the level of misguided children; again this is very characteristic of their attitude. And prohibition doesn't work anyway. Think of all the drugs that are banned and have been for many years; are they therefore never used by anyone? So even if you do not smoke you should stand in opposition this new law. As Pastor Niemöller could have said: "First they came for the smokers..."

Centre Port

 

One of the loveliest locations on the east coast of England is the Wash, a bay made up of shallow sandbanks and multiple river estuaries. It is a major conservation zone with huge colonies of seabirds, seals and eels. It includes a huge salt marsh, one of the biggest in Europe. This was originally much bigger and extended almost as far as Cambridge; but during the Middle Ages it was drained and turned into farmland. The land around the Wash is very flat and reminds me of my mother's family home in the Netherlands. This means that landmarks such as Ely Cathedral and the King's Lynn silo are major landmarks. Apart from several dredged shipping channels and some coastal flood defences, the area is untouched and natural. The secret of the Wash's rich wildlife is the complex movement of water and sediment as the rivers mix with the tides and winds. This causes variable temperature and salinity zones essential for some of the shellfish that live there. Now, like everything else sweet and natural in the world, it has to be interfered with. The government have expressed a wish to build a causeway across the mouth of the Wash, sealing it off forever from the open sea. The life-giving currents and migration routes of seals and eels would be severed. The causeway would carry a road which will shorten the journey from Hunstanton to Skegness from sixty-four miles to eleven miles. This means you'll be able to get from your home to your work cubicle much quicker. Also on the causeway will be a gigantic tidal energy scheme which could power 600,000 homes. It will also have a harbour built on it, hence the name. Centre Port faces much deeper waters so larger ships will be able to dock than those currently using the inland ports of King's Lynn and Boston. This means even more containers of cheap disposable Chinese tat will be able to reach us even faster at an even lower price. This idea has been toyed with since the '60's, but nothing official was decided. Now a company called Port Evo has unveiled formal plans. New Roswell Police Patch

 

A new uniform patch has been designed for the Roswell Police Department and in tune with the rest of the town's iconography it includes an alien UFO motif. All American uniforms include a fabric patch which contains encoded or symbolic information about what it represents. The previous patch was a simple blue shield background with the words ROSWELL POLICE surrounding the sun symbol of the Zia Pueblo Indians, exactly as it appears on the New Mexican flag; and inside this was a yucca plant, the state flower of New Mexico. This new patch is ET green with a white border. The background is black or very dark green. Inside it is the Zia sun symbol like the old patch except this one is light green and it says around the inner circle: Protect and serve those that land here with two grey alien faces on either side. Inside is a motif that looks like a letter R, for Roswell, but the gaps in the R double up as a flying saucer with a tapering beam shining downwards. Roswell's Police Chief Lance Bateman (who looks a lot like a brother porter of mine!) said the department recently ordered an initial batch of five hundred as a trial to see what they looked like in use. The officers themselves were asked to design a new patch and choose the one they liked the most. The winner was this one and the artist was Support Services Sergeant Trong Nguyen. The skeptics resent the fact that Roswell has become so affluent because of its UFOlogical notoriety. I disagree. What is wrong with a town exploiting its history for its own prosperity? If you object to that then you'd better go to Stratford-upon-Avon and tell them to get rid of all the Shakespeare stuff. "But that's different because Shakespeare was real!" says the skepper. "The Roswell UFO was just a fake story!" Well, that's a matter of opinion.

SETI Success?

 

Prof. Simon Holland has come up on HPANWO before, see: https://hpanwo-voice.blogspot.com/2022/02/skeptic-copium.html. Since I wrote that article two years ago, this contradictory Scottish science vlogger has taken an even stranger turn, one that makes me wonder what on earth is he playing at? As I have said in my SETI talks, the biggest problem the movement faces is not data gathering but processing. Electronic noise of every frequency, wavelength and amplitude is constantly pouring into our radio telescope antennas to be stored on tapes and disks until somebody can find the time to sift through it all and see if it contains anything organized. This is why SETI@Home was a creative and effective way of clearing the vast backlog. It allowed everybody with a home PC to join in. Officially no confirmed candidate signal was ever found; but according to Prof Holland, that's not true. What happened was an Italian group had the idea of rechecking the SETI@Home data blocks for Doppler shift, a test that hadn't been done before; this revealed whether a radio source is moving relative to the receiver in terms of distance. This will inevitably happen on one level because the earth is moving; rotating every day and orbiting the sun once per year. Therefore the tests had to control for that; but afterwards they then discovered that one radio source was still Doppler shifting in the same way, which can only mean it is coming from an exoplanet orbiting its own star. As a result various SETI projects are being escalated with massively increased funding and new telescopes are being built. It is run by the EU and not the USA, which is the original heartland of SETI. Prof. Holland says he found this out from somebody whom he called "the source of this information". That is an unbelievable thing for a skeptic to say. It is the kind of thing the skeppers constantly castigate us woo-woos for. This source told Simon that the EU run network has found a modulated signal, exactly the thing SETI proponents have been looking for since the days of Drake and Sagan. Why don't we all know about this? Apparently, according to Prof. Simon Holland's source, the scientists don't want to publish too soon; they want to wait until they're a hundred percent certain. However, as I say in my SETI talk, see background link below, you can't keep something like this secret; the conspiracy would be too top-heavy. The telescope network stretches from Manchester to Namibia; it involves a huge number of people constantly communicating. A leak would be unavoidable. Not only that, but the evidence they are examining doesn't come from a pile of debris in a paddock sealed off by the military police, it is right above our heads where we can all see it. Astronomy is the one true democratic science. You cannot have cover-ups in astronomy. Therefore I doubt the content of these two videos very much. So what is going on? Is somebody pulling Holland's leg or is he pulling ours? If so why? It could be an attempt to muddy the waters in the rising public awareness of UFO's. SETI is a totally superfluous enterprise when you consider what these multi-million pound instruments are looking for in distant galaxies is actually here on earth already and sometimes flying just a few feet above our heads. However, these confusion techniques often backfire very badly. I double-checked and confirmed that Holland did not upload these videos on April the 1st. Perhaps he is simply quitting skeptic YouTube with a bang; or maybe he has just had a mental breakdown. We'll see.

Furbies Mystery

 

Furbies were a child's toys that first became popular in the late 1990's. They were electronic and could produce sounds. This began as random gibberish, but then they were programmed to begin speaking recognizable human language over time. This would have felt to the child like the toy was learning to talk. A friend has made me aware that a group of psychical researchers had experimented with séances and scrying, using a crystal ball, and then weird things started to happen one spring in that era. They began receiving visions of Furbies; it sounds almost comical; then they started seeing them in real life. They got on a bus and found a Furbie left on the seat beside them. It kept repeating: "UFO is tasty" and similar outlandish phrases. After that they began receiving phone calls in which a Furbie voice spoke at the other end. Most alarmingly of all, one apparently fell from a high window on a tower block and landed beside them; it had spontaneously caught fire. The Twitter users who reported this swear this is true. This is a weird case, but not unfamiliar to others I've heard of. It includes the manifestation of physical solid objects, apports, in such a manner that it frightens and harasses. Israel's Killer Robots

 

One of the most automated militaries in the world is that of Israel. For its size and population, that tiny nation in the Near East receives some of the most lavish foreign aid in the world. This includes collaboration with defence contractors and the sharing of technology. Christopher Everard's documentary Superstate describes some of the drones and robots being developed by the Israel Defence Forces, including a terrifying thing that looks like a snake, see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1JnQL7mjspg. There's also another machine called a "dog" which moves on four legs, see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JD0SnMFMFoY. These vehicles are very difficult to knock over and can traverse almost any surface. They can climb stairs and very steep hills. Source: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm3164110/. A lot of the fighting in Gaza is happening underground. Hamas has dug out a huge network of tunnels and subterranean bases across the territory and the company Roboteam has developed some small portable robots that can explore the tunnels and identify enemy positions without risking personnel. Underground it's not always possible to direct the robot with remote control so it has some autonomous capabilities. This makes it very different to, say, the Gladiator or MQ9 Reaper. These platforms are controlled by a human pilot just like any other. The only difference is the pilot is not inside the aircraft; instead they are sitting on the ground in a control centre, sometimes a long way away, driving their charge via remote control. Autonomous robots are controlled by an AI computer which can direct and make decisions by themselves. They can take photographs, pick up electronic intelligence, detect mines or booby traps and transport hardware, all without the help of any human operator. It is reported that no autonomous robot is armed. They cannot initiate combat without human supervision... yet! It is technically possible though. Will we one day see the dawning of the age of killer robots? This has sometimes been compared to Robocop, but that is inaccurate. The famous film is about a policeman killed in the line of duty and reanimated as a cyborg. He is not a robot; his human side remains and in fact it grows stronger over the course of the story. Viewers of the movie will know that the cyborg cop is introduced to replace a completely mechanical law enforcement robot called ED-209 after the robot kills somebody accidentally in a test. This is what concerns me. Unlike most people I do not take a partisan position in Israel-Gaza conflict. I've seen a huge amount of propaganda levelled at both sides and I can't work the rights and wrongs. I just feel sorry for all innocent Israelis and Palestinians caught up in it, as I say in the background link. Military robots with the ability to kill will almost certainly be introduced at some point if the war continues; and it won't stop there. After they have proved themselves on the battlefields of Gaza they will appear in other countries in other wars, and indeed for peacetime roles in the police as well as the military. There's nothing the government would like more than to remove the human element from their ability to deliver violence. It is actually very inconvenient for them having their guns in the hands of flesh-and-blood brain carriers who have thoughts and feelings of their own; and who sometimes rebel against their instructions. This is why they go to so much effort to control us on a mental level... How many seconds do I have to comply?

Total Eclipse of the State

 

An eclipse of the sun is the most obvious astronomical effect visible from the earth's surface. It occurs when the shadow of the moon passes across the earth. They are actually not rare; one occurs at least every eighteen months, however they don't always appear in the same place. Actually a spot on the earth's surface can only expect to experience a total solar eclipse about once every three to four hundred years. As a result they are an event of curiosity and wonder for the people who live where one occurs. Often people will have a festival of some kind and eclipses are also connected to numerous superstitions in all cultures. During a total eclipse the location becomes almost as dark as night for a few minutes, usually about four to seven, although in 1973 some people aboard a Concorde supersonic airliner enjoyed totality for seventy-four minutes as the plane chased the moon's shadow at mach two, see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mzwwofB5_Nc. Eclipses are generally harmless. They can be alarming for some people and for more intelligent animals like dogs and horses; but after the moon's shadow moves on things just return to normal. The only real danger involved in an eclipse is if people try to look at the sun. This can cause serious eye injury, possibly resulting in permanent blindness. It is important never to look at the sun without special observation sunglasses; normal sunglasses are not good enough. As I said, a solar eclipse is a completely normal and natural event with a very simple cause; it is a part of the earth's relationship to other bodies in the solar system. It can also do no harm so long as the people in its locale are sensible and take basic precautions. Therefore I have to wonder why the hell the government have declared a state of emergency. When I first heard of about this on Monday I assumed it was an April Fool, but it wasn't. The Ontario Niagara Region and the US state of Indiana will both be under police and military lockdown throughout Monday. Why? Because large numbers of people from areas close to the eclipse path are planning to travel to the locale to witness totality and the authorities are concerned that they will cause traffic jams and threaten "infrastructure", that all too commonly used word. Governor Holcomb of Indiana said: "The massive number of people viewing this event in our state may well stress and/or interfere with first responder and public safety communications and emergency response systems such that a technological or other emergency may occur," It is quite normal for people to travel deliberately to an eclipse locale. When one occurred in 1999 in the UK several hundred thousand people flocked to the southwest coast of England to enjoy it. I myself stayed in Oxford, but we had a 98% partial eclipse here and I went to Port Meadow with some friends to get a good view. There was no state of emergency needed to cope with it, except maybe a few extra traffic policemen to clear congestion. Seaside resorts such as Torquay, Penzance, Minehead and St Ives enjoyed a prosperous late season boom. Everybody had a really good time. So why all of a sudden are states of emergency necessary? I honestly think that the government is now just looking for excuses to flex their authoritarian muscles. When there is no real reason they will just make one up. The "nanny state" mentality is more than just annoying, it is sinister. It is reducing the adult population to the level of silly children or even farm animals. Alien invasion movies vary enormously in terms of technical quality and intellectual content. The new Netflix series 3 Body Problem scores quite highly on both axes. It explores the possibility of contact with an extraterrestrial civilization that is so sophisticated that it knows how to communicate using quantum entanglement and create designer matter from the subatomic level, something we humans have barely begun developing. When I first heard about quantum entanglement, "spooky action at a distance" it seemed obvious to me that if you could somehow capture the two entangled particles you could build a wonderful communications device. Unlike with electromagnetic waves, you wouldn't be constrained by the speed of light, saying hello to a distant star cluster and waiting 50,000 years for a response greeting, see: https://hpanwo-voice.blogspot.com/2017/12/ben-emlyn-jones-at-awakecon-2017.html. You could literally have a normal phone conversation with somebody in the farthest galaxy. In the series it is therefore particle physicists, not astronomers, who hear the first messages from the stars. The title refers to the problems a hypothetical planet would have if it were gravitationally influenced by two other heavenly bodies; for example, what would tides be like if the earth had two moons? The aliens live on a planet with three suns about four light-years away; therefore it is probably the Alpha Centauri system, the closest stars to the solar system. Their own three body problem has rendered their planet uninhabitable so they are heading for the earth in a fleet of ark spacecraft. They expect to arrive in about four hundred years. They also send a series of chilling messages to the people of earth demonstrating their awesome technical supremacy and declaring their contempt for humanity. When they arrive it will obviously not be with goodwill. An organization on the earth is set up to counter this threat and it recruits scientists to build weapons. Anything can be justified to protect the earth from the evil aliens, although this ethical equation is pushed to its limits. In one scene a weapon is built to destroy a ship run by human allies of the alien conquerors. A torpedo etc wouldn't be good enough because it would supposedly allow the crew an opportunity to destroy vital evidence, so the attackers create a mesh of microscopically thin, but extremely strong nanofibres which slice the ship into strips like very powerful cheese wire; including everybody inside it. This is one of the most grisly things I've ever seen on TV. The programme has a 15 certificate and a warning for violence, but why not an 18? So the programme does appeal to the side of the viewer that enjoys sadistic entertainment.
 
3 Body Problem is very woke; and this gives it a slightly retro feel. Wokery is something that seems to be going out of fashion a bit, and in my opinion that's a good job. Of course the box office has been demanding its departure for a very long time, but finally cinema and TV studios appear to be responding. Therefore the level of political correctness in the series would be better suited to something from the late 20-teens. As I've often noticed, the worst excesses of wokeism in a TV programme or film tend to be at the very beginning, for example see: https://hpanwo-voice.blogspot.com/2023/07/messiah.html. All the heroic characters are either female and/or non-white. Auggie, played by the Mexican actress Eliza González, is a cardboard cut-out "Strong!" "Independent!" "Woman!" The other female leads are very similar. The one exception being Ye Wenjie, a scientist working as a slave to the ChiComs in the '60's as they make an attempt to contact the aliens. Later on in the story she moves to Oxford with her daughter to work at the Harwell laboratory. She is a far deeper, more mature and more colourful character, more like a traditional heroine. She is played by Zine Tseng and by Rosalind Chao as her older self. The first white male we are introduced to is a drunken karaoke singer... and not a very good one... who tries to flirt with Jin and Auggie in a pub. When he asks them what their jobs are they sneer at him and describe their scientific professions in very technical terms. He frowns with incomprehension and walks away. Another white man is called Jack and he is an immature foul-mouthed overweight neckbeard addicted to computer games. He would live in his mother's basement except she was very rich and has died; so he has inherited her fortune. His whole giant house is his mother's basement. He dies early on in the series, killed by a woman of course. The only white male character approaching a respectful portrayal is Will, and his reverence comes only from his courage in the face of a tragic Cyrano de Bergerac kind of back-story and fate. I suspect the reason the producers have exhumed wokery from its shallow grave is because making this series was quite controversial. It is based on a book by Liu Cixin which won a Hugo Award, one the highest accolades in science fiction literature. China does not export a lot of its contemporary art and so this was a very remarkable achievement. There is an indigenous TV adaptation from last year called 三体(I don't know how that is pronounced) and it is far more faithful to the original story; not least because it is set in China and all the main characters are Chinese, like in the novel. To change those characters' nationalities and the setting is risking a charge of "cultural appropriation" and so the casting and portrayals were probably done to virtue-signal against that. They also make an attempt to maintain a link to the Chinese origin of the story through some of the characters and locations.

One thing that really surprised me about 3 Body Problem is that I can't help wondering if the producers have had some contact with the Conspirasphere. The reason is that Auggie looks and sounds very similar to Sarah Rachel Adams, see: https://www.sarahradams.com. Another character is called Thomas Wade and he is the leader of the earth defence programme. He is played by Liam Cunningham of Game of Thrones fame, but he is made to look, sound and act very like Miles Johnston, see: https://thebasesproject.org. I immediately went on the lookout for my own counterpart, but luckily they never included him. The eight part series is rather anticlimactic and has a very open-ended conclusion. This leads me to think there is a plan to adapt the novel's two sequels, what is known collectively as the 地球往事, "Remembrance of Earth's Past" trilogy. I was rather disappointed that the plot was not more complicated. Nobody in the story doubts the validity of the government's commentary about the alien threat, even to the point where they're willing to slice a ship and its passengers into strips like a loaf of bread. The alien interventions could be simulated with Project Blue Beam technology. This element would have been a welcome addition to the storyline, but it is not even considered. There are some good performances by some old and semi-retired actors including a rare non-comedic role by Adrian Edmondson and also Jonathan Pryce who was made famous by Brazil, see: https://hpanwo.blogspot.com/2008/12/hanged-hangman.html. I have mixed feelings about 3 Body Problem. The first three or four episodes are very well done. The mystery is handed and delivered very skilfully and the characters are generally more amiable. From about episode five the energy slackens a bit and the story atrophies. As I said, a very obvious and fertile opportunity to enliven the narrative is not taken; which is even stranger if the creators did indeed study the Conspirasphere. This series is better than some alien invasion movies I could mention, and compared to Independence Day it is Shakespeare.
