I swear somebody at the Royal Mint is gaslighting us! A few
weeks ago it was announced there was a two pound coin coming out themed on
George Orwell, see: https://hpanwo-voice.blogspot.com/2025/01/orwellian-coin.html.
Now, on the fifth anniversary of Brexit they have brought out a new fifty pence
piece to "celebrate" it. The reverse simply has the words "Peace,
prosperity and friendship with all nations. 31 January 2020 ." Several high profile Remoaners have
pledged to boycott the coin. If they ever get one they will refuse to use it...
Fine; feel free to send them to me! One of them is the obnoxious Philip Pullman...
who unfortunately does write very good books. He also complained because the
sentence has no Oxford Pullman

Apologies Ben but stating "Now, on the fifth anniversary of Brexit they have brought out a new fifty pence piece to "celebrate" it" is completely untrue. The coin was released in 2020 and no new coin is planned regarding Brexit. so "Several high profile Remoaners have pledged to boycott the coin" are a little late to the party! This opinion post is a great example of skim reading of an article probably appearing in your social media timelines without checking sources. Worse still it has succeeded in getting you speculating on coincidences (Orwell coin) and motives (gaslighting us) with a splash of conspiracy paranoia thrown in which highlights poor critical thinking (questions researchers should ask are Why are they releasing a coin now and why isn't it more widely known about?). The icing on the cake is is the Philip Pullman moan something lifted straight from a 5 year old article before the coin actually was released a 30 sec google check would show. I hate fact checking everything I read but a bare minimum is to check the sources and dates which is second nature for the computer literate and social media savvy without making claims of being a 'researcher'. https://www.theguardian.com/politics/shortcuts/2020/jan/27/the-brexit-50p-coin-controversy-boycott-new-coin-alastair-campbell-philip-pullman
ReplyDeleteDuly noted, FC, but I don't think anything you've discovered is relevant to the points I made as a result. Whether the coin was issued in 2020 or now, the point is, it is a celebration of Brexit. It has also been advertized on social media now specifically because it is Brexit five years on. I've never seen one of these coins in circulation so it's understandable that I assumed it was brand new. As a result, it IS strangely synchronistic regarding the profile of the Orwell coin too. As a result of this I think the rhetoric you include in your comment in misapplied.
